AREA OF FOCUS: THE AIDS MEMORIAL PATHWAY

The AMP: AIDS Memorial Pathway is a unique installation that includes 4 major works of public art, stories hosted online, and an app with augmented reality (AR) features. The physical footprint extends from the north edge of the park, across Barbara Bailey Way to the plaza, and up to the community room of the Station House Building.

Completed in 2022, The AMP uses public art to create a place for remembrance and reflection, utilizes technology to share stories about the epidemic and the diverse community responses to the crisis, and provides a call to action to end HIV/AIDS, stigma, and discrimination.

There are two artworks of The AMP to visit within Cal Anderson Park. Ribbon of Light is in the park’s northeast corner. Created by Horatio Hung‑Yan Law, it features three large and illuminated glass sculptures placed along a landscaped pathway adjacent to the main trail.

In the northwest corner, We’re Already Here is one of a series of tableaus by Civilization which use protest signs and their accompanying messages to evoke historic moments of public convergence. Across the street, you can find more of these artworks that will lead you to other parts of The AMP.

If you download The AMP app, available for both iPhone and android phones, you can access interactive experiences, including a Names Tree, virtual tour, and additional information related to HIV/AIDS.

Complete information about The AMP, as well as video stories and regional AIDS history can be found on the website: www.theAMP.org
